The Story Behind Independent Man

I wrote this song about my failed marriage.  It is extremely important to discuss the roles of the husband and wife before the marriage takes place. This way, there will be no confusion of what is expected from either person.  I should have discussed monetary issues with my fiance before taking him as my husband.  I realized I had different expectations from him in the marriage.  I discovered that I needed an independent man who could manage our entire household on his own---without my help!  I am a traditionalist in that respect and I will not let any man make me feel badly about it. I am old school.  What can I say?  I cannot tolerate any man asking me how much money I have inside of my purse; telling me he needs my help; telling me that our household cannot survive without two incomes; monitoring how many job interviews I have been on in a week; scolding me because the job I really want does not pay me enough.  None of those things worked for me, and they still don't.  I do not blame him for the ruination of our marriage, though.  I really wanted a marriage where the man went to work and took care of all of our household needs. I should have openly communicated my feelings to him about my role as a traditional wife (who also believes in working), as well as what I expected from him as a traditional husband.  I am now aware that two people must know each other very well before they get married.  They must discuss how the marriage will operate on a daily basis in order for it to be successful. They especially need to openly talk about FINANCES and agree on FINANCES!

Independent Man-Song Lyrics

When you go out to work

You make your own money so

Why are you looking at mine

When I came into your life

You were paying all the time

When we went out to dine

Now you're asking me how much

Money I have inside my purse

Like it's a curse

For you to open your wallet first

I just don't understand why

You won't take care of you and I

You've changed and I just want to cry

I need an independent man

An independent man

A man who doesn't need me

I need a man who stands alone

A man who takes his throne

Who stands on his own two feet

Before we were married you

Were trying very hard to prove

That you could buy and cook all of my food

Now you complain about the money I make

For Heaven's sake you need to pay

Attention to the salary you are paid

You say you are man enough

To tell me life is really tough

And you need my help

You just keep on lying to yourself

All of the sudden I'm supposed to go and change my role

And help you out

I'm gonna shout

You better shut your mouth

I need an independent man

An independent man

A man who doesn't need me

I need a man who stands alone

A man who takes his throne

Who stands on his own two feet

You are supposed to be a man

So you need to take a stand

And wear a pair of pants

You need to change your attitude

Instead of one job you get two

So I can look up to you

You need to stop spending your dough

On electronics and clothes

And pay our rent

Well don't you look at me

Cuz I am not the one you see

It was you who spent all the money

Now you sit in the corner and pout

Cuz I will not help you out

Oh no no no no no

What happened to that independent man I used to know

Who could write a check

And make sure all my needs were met

I really wanna know where did he go

I need an independent man

An independent man

A man who doesn't need me

I need a man who stands alone

A man who takes his throne

Who stands on his own two feet

I need an independent man
